Easter Basket Animals

Include cute spring critters in your Easter baskets this year by making your own mini stuffed animals! A circle, triangle and rectangle are easy to transform into a chick, bunny and sheep! All you need is felt or other fabric, scissors and fabric glue or a needle and thread.

Supplies for a Chick

To create an Easter chick all you need are two circles and a diamond. You can cut out perfect circles easily by tracing a drinking glass or other round household item. The circles will become the body of your chick and the diamond will be the beak.

Creating your Chicks

Fold the diamond in half to create your chick's beak. Glue or stitch along the fold to attach the beak to the circle. You can add eyes to your chick with a couple of beads and if you want to give the chick a little more personality you can attach a few feather shapes cut from felt.

Shapes for Sheep

Create a friendly sheep with a couple of rounded rectangles. Trace a credit card to get the rectangle perfect and if you want to get fancy cut it out with scalloped scissors to give that extra fluffy feel. Cut four skinny rectangles for the legs, a rounded triangle for the head and two leaf shapes for the ears.

Assembling your Sheep

Place the legs in between the front and back rectangles so they will be sewn or glued in when you attach the two pieces together. Stitch or glue the ears to the sheep's head, placing one ear behind and one in front.

Bunny Shapes

Create a sweet Easter bunny by cutting two triangles out of your felt or fabric. Round the corners to create the body of your bunny. Then cut two long teardrop shapes for ears. You'll need a fluffy pom pom for the tail. If you'd like to get a bit more decorative cut smaller long teardrops for inside the ears and a fat teardrop for your bunny's belly.

Attaching the Pieces

Attach the tail to the back of your bunny and any extra belly or ear pieces to the front. Place the ears in between the two large triangles that make up the body so that they will be sewn into place when the body is sewn together. You can cut a small triangle for a nose or try embroidering one on.

Stuff and Finish

Sew or glue the fronts and backs of your critters together, leaving a small opening to stuff them. You can use dried rice, beans or lentils to give them a bit of weight or something softer like polyester filling. Once you've stuffed your creature stitch or glue the opening closed.

Finishing Touches

Once your little animals are stuffed and sewed up add any extra pieces or features. Glue or stitch on the sheep's heads and paint in eyes and noses if you'd like.

Creating an Egg

You can make a cute Easter egg for your chicks to hide in with a couple of simple ovals cut from your fabric or felt. Make sure the ovals are a little larger than the Easter critters you want to put inside. Decorate your egg by cutting curved stripes from contrasting colors. You can cut shapes out of larger stripes to add extra pattern and texture. Don't worry too much about the stripes fitting at this stage, you can trim them later if they are too big.

Finishing the Egg

Arrange your two oval shapes on top of one another and lay the stripes across them. Sew or glue around the edge of the bottom half of the egg, attaching the two ovals and the stripes to each other. Leave the top half of the egg open and just stitch or glue the stripes on without attaching the front oval to the back. When you're finished you will have a cute egg pouch!

Add a Strap

If you'd like to turn your Easter egg pouch into a handy way to carry your Easter critters attach a brightly colored ribbon to create a strap. Tie a bow in each end of the ribbon and add a couple of stitches to secure it. Stitch the bows securely to either side of the egg, just below the opening, and fill with chicks and bunnies!

You can use bright pastel colors for you animals for an extra Easter touch, or stick with more natural colors if that fits your palette. These little critters are great in Easter baskets, but they are also perfect decorations around the house or outside your front door.
